Viking River Cruises has confirmed that it has found an investor, according to a spokesperson for the line. At press time, the name of the new investor had not been released, but the line confirmed that it is not a travel-related company. In addition, the line is expected to add shares rather than sell existing shares to the new investor. The announcement follows rumors in the industry that Viking River was in search of an outside investor to bolster the company financially. The company also has discontinued a number of its offerings. Its tour arm, Viking Tours, dropped all but three of its 12 itineraries. Those three are Egypt, India and the Galapagos Islands. The line also will not operate two chartered ships this year -- the Viking Century Sky in China and the Lavrinenkov in Ukraine. Viking will operate three ships -- the Viking Surkov, the Viking Kirov and the Viking Pakhomov -- in Russia this year, instead of four. And the newly built Viking Legend, which was slated for a June launch, will now launch July 5th. |
