PEI tallies record numbers, 5 maiden calls in longest season

Prince Edward Island’s Charlottetown Harbour Authority expects to top 100,000 passengers and crew this season, its longest running ever with ships beginning calls in April.

This month Charlottetown is hosting five maiden visits. The first was Silver Whisper on Monday, with Celebrity Summit due Thursday, followed by Crown Princess on Friday. Saturday will see the inaugural visit of MSC Poesia as MSC Cruises initiates its first Canada/New England sailings. Charlottetown’s last maiden call of the season is Amadea on Sept. 29.

‘The 2010 cruise season has been a phenomenal year for the Province of Prince Edward Island,’ said Les Parsons, ceo of the Charlottetown Harbour Authority. He called the economic impact from cruising ‘substantial’ and noted the business comes at a typically slower time of year, which helps extend the tourist season for many operators.

Parsons also noted that new shore excursions are enhancing the passenger experience of Charlottetown and helping attract more lines.

2011 promises to break this year’s record with more than 105,000 passengers and crew. The season kicks off on May 2 with Holland America Line’s Maasdam. HAL is a mainstay for Charlottetown’s cruise business, representing approximately half of the calls.

The 2011 economic impact from cruising is estimated at approximately $5.3m.
