The Miami-based line says the 3,690-passenger vessel was
"floated out" from a dry dock at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy
where it is under construction -- one of the last major milestones before the
vessel's debut next May.
The initial stages of a cruise ship's construction take place in a dry dock
facility. Once exterior outfitting is completed, the dry dock is flooded with
water and the ship is floated to a wet dock facility where construction
continues.
The next major milestone for the ship - sea trials in the Adriatic Sea - will
take place early next year. The vessel is scheduled to debut on May 1 in Venice.
The Magic will be the 23rd vessel for Carnival, the world's largest cruise line,
and is one of two the company currently has on order. The 3,690-passenger
Carnival Breeze, a sister to the Carnival Magic, is scheduled to debut in spring
2012.
Carnival already has announced a number of new-for-the-line features for the
Carnival Magic, including the line's first pub and first Italian family-style
restaurant. The Magic also will have an expansive deck-top sports complex
featuring the first-ever ropes course and outdoor fitness area at sea.
Carnival Magic is slated to debut with a nine-night cruise from Venice to
Barcelona May 1-10, 2011, followed by a series of 7- to 12-night Mediterranean
voyages from Barcelona – the line's first departures from that port. Following a
16-night trans-Atlantic crossing, Carnival Magic will launch seven-night
Caribbean service from Galveston, Texas on Nov. 14, 2011.
