Australia is the hot spot for Cunard

Australia has emerged as the fastest growing market for Cunard Line as the brand’s senior executive said the local market is on track for 25% growth this year.

Speaking onboard the Queen Victoria in Sydney, Cunard president and managing director, Peter Shanks, said Australia had joined Germany as the cruise line’s fastest growing market.  “When you think of how far Australia is away from most
things, to have such a strong piece of business down in Australia is terrific,” Shanks said. “We’re hoping to sell around 10,000 passengers in the Australian market this year, which will be growth of 25%.”  An estimated 40% of Australian passengers are in some way linked to a world cruise, he added.

The UK and US both account for around 40% of Cunard’s business.  Australia accounts for 7% while Germany makes up 11%.

Shanks said Cunard had built three ships in the last six years.  The Queen Elizabeth will join the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria from October. The inaugural voyage sold out in 29 minutes and Shanks said the maiden world voyage is already half full. The Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth will rendezvous in Sydney Harbour one year from today – February 22, 2011.

The Queen Victoria was illuminated pink on Friday night to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
