Holland America Line has been given the best rating in an environmental chart of international cruise lines
Holland America Line has been given the best rating in an environmental chart of international cruise lines, which has sparked controversy within the sector.

The report card, compiled by Friends of the Earth (FoE), compared the environmental footprint of 11 major lines and 113 ships. The lines were ranked according to three environmental criteria: sewage treatment, air pollution reduction and water quality compliance.

Holland America came top, scoring a B– grade, although this was down from a B last year. Disney was ranked as the “most improved” cruise line, with a C–, which an FoE spokesman said was down to the line’s advanced water-treatment system.

Three Holland America Line and two Princess ships received A grades. Crystal Cruises came last, scoring an “unacceptable” F grade for its sewage treatment and air pollution reduction.

But the report was condemned as “flawed” by the world’s largest cruise association, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which was backed by the UK’s Passenger Shipping Association.

The CLIA claimed FoE “continues to use innuendo and to mis-state the facts to advance its agenda”. “This ‘report card’ is not based on science, law, or the facts, and is rooted in FoE’s own arbitrary and flawed criteria,” it added.

Crystal Cruises’ Mimi Weisband said it was “very disturbed” at FoE’s “questionable criteria and selective research”. She said the line had implemented initiatives on energy conservation, water filtration and waste reduction, and its policy on sewage discharge exceeded international regulations.

An FoE spokesman stood by the report. “There is a need for improvements across the sector. Some lines have older ships, but these can be upgraded, and that is not a good enough excuse,” he said.
