Silversea's Perasso quits the company

Silversea president and chief executive Amerigo Perasso has abruptly quit the company, just four months after the arrival of former Campari chief Enzo Visone in the new role of executive chairman. Company owner and vice chairman Manfredi Lefebvre denied Perasso’s departure was related to a clash of roles or personalities.

‘Amerigo wants to move on to something else,’ he told Seatrade Insider. ‘He has been with the company for 13 years, three of which as chief executive and before that as chief financial officer.

‘He has just taken delivery of a new ship (Silver Spirit, delivered last December), which is always a great satisfaction. And he sees that I have Enzo Visone with me, which means that I am not alone in running the company and that there is no problem with the transition.’

Though Perasso was not immediately available for comment, Lefebvre added that he did not believe he was moving on to another job elsewhere. He added, however, that ‘I am sure he will have a lot of offers. He is a very capable person, with a good resume for this market.’

At the same time, he did not anticipate that Perasso’s departure would impact Silversea unduly, nor would he be seeking a replacement. ‘We have a very good team, with Ken Watson and Christian Sauleau in the US, and Enzo Visone and myself here’ in Monaco.

He added that ‘this is a family company and very closely managed. I am always here, and I follow things quite a lot. And Enzo has been here for four months. He is a very experienced and capable executive and by now, he probably knows everything that is going on. I don’t see any repercussions.’

He added that Visone ‘is already chief executive of the holding company for all our leisure businesses’ and that the role of chief executive at Silversea was ‘just one part of the management of the group.’ He said Visone would likely take over the bulk of Perasso’s duties.

Lefebvre’s comments are unlikely to dampen speculation that Perasso’s departure owes something to Visone’s arrival, however. Since his arrival, Visone has been at pains to stress that the pair could work together.

He described his role as more strategic while Perasso retained responsibility for day-to-day operations and characterised his appointment as a strengthening of the Silversea management team.

At the same time, there had been reports of tension since his arrival, with some market observers noting that it appeared to be getting a trifle over-crowded at the top of the company.

Perasso’s departure comes at a critical juncture for Silversea, with Visone now undertaking a sweeping assessment of its options for growth at a time when the market is showing distinct signs of recovery. Among other possibilities, Visone is looking at the options for fleet expansion and the company’s future capital requirements, with an IPO one of the possibilities under examination.
