NCL's newest, the  EPIC - will be handed over on June 17th

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Epic, which is being completed at STX France in St. Nazaire, will be handed over on June 17, a date confirmed by the yard yesterday, and two days later than originally scheduled. The 153,000gt ship will undergo sea trials this week, the yard said.

According to an NCL spokeswoman, the ship was always scheduled to stay in St. Nazaire until June 17, and there is no change to the schedule of inaugural events.

No official comment has been issued concerning the police enquiry following the fire that broke out on board on May 3 at the rear of Deck 4 in one of the provisioning areas which caused severe damage to the ship's cabling.

There have since been two other small fires on the ship which did not cause any damage, the most recent one being last Sunday as yard employees and subcontractors' families visited the ship. Some 3,500 people had to be evacuated when cardboard started burning in an air conditioning room on Deck 8.

An investigation is going on among the some 2,500 employees of STX France and the 1,500 crew members already on board.

Norwegian Epic completed its first sea trials in mid-February.
