American Cruise Lines Christens New Ship Independence

American Cruise Lines christened its newest ship, the Independence, on Independence Day, with U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) as godmother.

The naming ceremony took place in Rockland, Maine, during the first of 13 seven-night “Maine Coast & Harbors” cruises for the Independence. In addition to Rockland, the Independence will visit the ports of Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Belfast, Castine and Portland.

The new, American-flagged ship carries 104 passengers and features a modern design and technological amenities.

As a native of Maine, Collins has an appreciation for the state’s maritime heritage. She is a supporter of shipbuilding at Bath Iron Works and at the many smaller boatyards up and down the coast.
