Artist sues cruise ship art auctioneer, alleging forgery of works. |

The Detroit Free-Press is reporting that a Chilean artist sued
cruise ship auctioneer Park West on Thursday, alleging the company is printing
and selling copies of his work without his permission. "From 1999 until today, every day, these forgeries have been sold behind my back by these unscrupulous entities," the news outlet quotes artist Alex Perez as saying after filing the suit in U.S. District Court in Detroit. "These organizations have no shame." The Free-Press, a sister paper to USA TODAY, quotes Perez as saying he contracted in 1996 with Rami Rotkopf, a Ft. Lauderdale art dealer and founder of Smart Publishers of Fine Art, to promote and sell his artwork. The Free-Press says Perez alleges Smart Publishers assigned his contract to Park West without his permission, and Park West began reproducing and selling his artwork at land-based and cruise ship auctions, in some cases with a forged signature. The company also is facing several other state and federal suits over its practices in the Detroit area and Seattle. The Free-Press says Park West is denying the allegations. "This is a totally ridiculous lawsuit," the news outlet quotes Park West lawyer Rodger Young as saying of the latest filing. Young tells the Free-Press that Park West won a defamation suit in Florida against Perez about three years ago preventing him from saying anything adverse about the company. Park West operates the art auctions on a number of cruise lines including Norwegian Cruise Line and, until this year, Royal Caribbean. |
