Hamburg wraps its busiest cruise season

With the last arrival of 2010, Black Watch on Monday, Hamburg Cruise Center ended its busiest year. 2010 began with AIDAblu’s christening in February and, for the fourth season in a row, Hamburg handled ships arriving for the Christmas markets in December.

All this means Hamburg has the potential to develop into a year-round cruise port, noted Gerd Drossel, md of Hamburg Cruise Center.

The city handled 104 cruise arrivals, up from 87 in 2009. The port expects to have reached a total of 235,000 passengers, compared to 126,839 last year.

Numerous maritime events included a pair of christenings and six maiden calls. The biggest ship was once again Queen Mary 2, followed by the new Celebrity Eclipse. Twenty-six ships arrived from 16 lines. The most frequent visitor was AIDAluna, with 17 departures.

In 2011, Hamburg expects further growth—in double-digit figures.

The new Altona terminal will be formally opened, and TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 2 will be christened on May 14, with the maiden voyage to sail the following day.
