Meyer Werft delivers its largest ship, Disney Dream

DCL president Karl Holz called the 128,000gt ship—with its AquaDuck water coaster, ‘Enchanted Art’ and inside rooms with virtual portholes— ‘extraordinary … in part because of the collaboration of the superb shipbuilders at Meyer Werft and the innovative technology and storytelling that our Disney team has developed and implemented aboard.’

For his part, Meyer Werft managing partner Bernard Meyer expressed great pride in delivering the largest ship ever built at the Papenburg yard. He said the collaboration among DCL, Meyer Werft and its suppliers has been ‘excellent and very creative.’

The newbuild contract was signed in April 2007, and the first steel was cut on March 2, 2009. The ship was floated out of Papenburg’s covered dock in fireworks-capped festivities on Oct. 30. After its conveyance along the River Ems, Disney Dream has been in a test-and-adjust period, including sea trials and a brief drydock in Hamburg.

The ship will remain in Bremerhaven for another week while additional crew members embark, and supplies and provisions are loaded. Disney Dream is scheduled to begin its Atlantic crossing on Dec. 19, with arrival in Port Canaveral on Jan. 4.

DCL veteran Capt. Tom Forberg will be at the helm. He also ushered out Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.
