Travel Industry hard hit? Is this an odd time for two new cruise lines to start up?

Two new cruise lines - Voyages to Antiquity and Cruise & Maritime Voyages - have chartered ships to start cruising in 2010.

Certainly both lines have experienced people at the helm who know their market so obviously they have confidence that the cruise market is going to be in good shape by their start dates.

Voyages of Antiquities is Gerry Herod's fourth cruise line start up and he plans to operate the chartered Aegean 1 a nice smaller sized (382 pax) cruise ship which he is currently refurbishing to operate exclusive style cruises to to a specialized market. It will be renamed Aegean Odyssey and will sail the Mediterranean on two-week cruises from May to November.

She will operate a series of two-week Mediterranean itineraries put together by historian John Julius Norwich, author of "The Middle Sea," who will also be among the on board guest lecturers, and her crew will also include a number of young historians

The second line is Cruise & Maritime, they have been around for some time and have a lot of experience in the small traditional ship and regional UK markets, as well as in operating cruise ships from Tilbury, UK.

The new line's first ship, the 820-berth Marco Polo, they have been marketing for the past two summers under the brand of Transocean Tours, they have now signed a five-year charter on the ship.  The first departure will take place on January 2, 2010 operating from the UK port of Tilbury year-round.

The line's second ship is the 800-berth Ocean Countess, a ship that was familiar to many as the Cunard Countess. Starting on April 18, 2010 the Ocean Countess will operate from UK regional ports, including Hull, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Greenock, Liverpool and Plymouth.

Cruise & Maritime will initially offer these 27,000 berths on the UK market but the program will be opened up to passengers from North America, Australasia and South Africa as well, and representation arrangements are now being put in place for these markets. The overall target market will be those that prefer smaller, more traditional ships
