Meshulam Zonis one of Carnival's Original Team dies at the age of 76

Mr. Meshulam Zonis, one of the founding figures of the modern cruise industry, passed away on November 1, 2009. Mr. Zonis was the former head of operations for Carnival Cruise Lines and in 1980 was named Senior Vice President.

Along with Ted Arison, he was a member of the original team that created Carnival Cruise Lines in 1972. He was instrumental in the acquisition of Carnival's first three ships, the MARDI GRAS, CARNIVALE and FESTIVALE especially realizing the potential of the latter to improve the company's standards and earnings.

Even earlier in 1966, he literally arrived aboard the first ship to begin modern cruising from Miami, the Israeli ferry NILI, that briefly began the operations of Arison Shipping.

In 1987 when Carnival became a publicly held company, he was named to the board of directors of Carnival Corporation. Mr. Zonis retired from Carnival Cruise Line in 2000, and retired from the board in 2003.

His career spanned the entire history of modern day cruising and his role in the establishment of Carnival as a financial powerhouse was vital. Mr. Zonis was 76.
