Mysteriously Raided Ship disappears Without any Trace

in the Atlantic Ocean

August 9, 2009: A double mystery surrounds the 1991-built ARCTIC SEA. The Maltese registered cargo ship, with a crew of 15 Russian was attacked in the Baltic Sea on July 24.

The freighter was carrying a cargo of lumber valued at 1.3 million-euro (US$1.8 million). The raiders were a group of English speaking black-clad masked men, who boarded the ship from a high-speed inflatable boat, claiming to be police officers.

The crew were bound and gagged while a 12-hour search ensued, there were allegations that crew were assaulted with rifle butts. It was not clear what the attackers were searching for, however, they left the vessel without taking any cash or belongings.

The ARCTIC SEA, with a cargo of timber bound for Algeria was allowed to continue her journey. The Swedish police were informed of the hijacking via the Russian authorities in Stockholm. ARCTIC SEA's arrival in Alergia was expected August 4.

In reports today, radio contact with the freighter was lost on July 28, and no further trace of the ship has been found. The ship's last position was off the Portuguese coast, all attempts to reach the vessel have failed. The Russian Navy of now involved in a search.
