Carnival postpones new nine-day Québec route

Carnival Cruise Lines cited the economic situation in postponing, for a second time, a new nine-day ‘Québec - After the Glaciers’ itinerary round-trip from New York to Québec City and the emerging St. Lawrence ports of Baie-Comeau and Havre-Saint-Pierre.

The program of three departures was first planned for this year on Carnival Triumph and then for 2010 on a bigger ship, Carnival Glory.

Instead of launching a new route at this time, the line has told the Québec ports it will concentrate on sales efforts for Carnival Glory’s four-day cruises to Saint John, New Brunswick, and five-day cruises to Saint John and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

According to Cruise the Saint Lawrence, Carnival has confirmed to the three Québec ports it is still very interested in their tourist attractions and will reassess the situation for 2011.

The association said Carnival’s decision does not call into question the development potential of the ports. Despite the setback, Québec City, Baie-Comeau and Havre-Saint-Pierre expect to increase passenger numbers in 2010.
