Carnival Corp. Explores China-Specific Cruise Line and New Ships, Adds to Asia Capacity

In a push to beef up its presence in China, Carnival Corp. is considering a joint venture with China Merchants Group (CMG) and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) that could result in a dedicated Chinese cruise brand, according to a statement issued by Carnival Corp. Thursday.

The project could also include the construction of new ships in China, as well as development of port infrastructure.

Carnival Corp., which already has 10 cruise brands under its umbrella, also plans to send two more ships -- Golden Princess and Costa Fortuna -- to the China cruise market in 2016, increasing its capacity in the region by 58 percent.

Costa Cruises' Costa Fortuna will join Costa Serena, Costa Atlantica and Costa Victoria in China. Meanwhile, Golden Princess will relocate from Melbourne to sail seasonally from Tianjin, joining Sapphire Princess as it relocates to China next year after two years of homeporting in Shanghai. Princess Cruises is slated to further strengthen its hold in the China market by debuting its third Royal-class new-build in Shanghai in 2017.

The Asia cruise region has gained significant traction in the past year, with announcements that several other high-profile ships -- including two of Royal Caribbean's three Quantum-class vessels -- would be moving there.
