  Rotterdam renovates the cruise terminal
Menu The Port of Rotterdam and the municipality (holding 70% of the port, 30% belongs to the State of the Netherlands) are investing significant sums to renovate the cruise terminal. These investments have been prompted by the increased scale in the cruise industry and an ambition to ensure more visits.

“Basically we should have the key adjustments ready by the time the largest cruiseship in the world, Oasis of the Seas [Royal Caribbean International], calls into our city in September 2014,” said port alderman Jeannette Baljeu. “One of the special things about Rotterdam is the fact that a colossal ship like this can moor in the very heart of our city, just like that.”

She continued: “Cruise passengers are pivotal to our city’s image and to its economy as well. Modernization means we will be able to welcome 60 cruiseships or even more every single year. And by offering more sightseeing packages, cruise passengers will be even more interested in visiting our city.”

On January 11 the Dutch city was the first port of call for newbuilding Norwegian Getaway as she sailed via Southampton to the US. Later this year Oasis of the Seas will arrive at the cruise terminal on its way to the Keppel-Verolme shipyard for maintenance. On its return 6,000 new passengers will embark.
