Could Europe End Up With Just  Two Ccruise Ship Builders

Prior to Korea's STX acquiring the Turku ship yard from the Aker Group and the St. Nazaire yard from Alstrom there were four major cruise ship builder in Europe located in Aker in Finland, Meyer Werf in Germany, Alstrom in France and Fincantieri in Italy.

Now wtih STX's acquisition of the Aker yard the number is reduced to three.

Add to this the news that Fincantieri is interested in securing the two-thirds interest in STX France which is held by the French government and that number could be reduced to just two.

STX's problems in handling the job guarantees and new labor terms for their French yard appears to have cost them MSC's two ship option which looks to be going to Fincantieri.

However, even though the European Competition Authorities allowed the merger of Germany's Meyer Werf and STX's Turku yard in Finland there is some doubt that they would approve the cruise ship building business being dominated by Fincantieir and Meyer Werf.

Besides which, the French government has publicly stated that have no interest in letting the yard go to another cruise ship builder, so it is likely that another buyer will be sought.
