Moreton Island new Jewel in P&O crown

P&O Cruises' Pacific Jewel was the first cruise ship to ever visit Queensland's Moreton Island on Saturday when she called in with 1,950-passengers as part of a four-night 'SeaBreak' from Sydney.

Queensland Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey, Carnival Australia CEO Ann Sherry and Tangalooma Island Resort director David James were on hand to greet passengers who had a full day to explore the island ahead of her return to Sydney at 8:00pm.

Over AUD$1 million is expected to be generated for the local economy by the six visits planned for Moreton Island in 2013, with P&O Cruises reporting that the four-night 'SeaBreaks' are amongst the most popular itineraries for this year.

"Moreton Island is literally on our doorstep and we're delighted to be giving close to twelve thousand interstate visitors the opportunity to experience its beauty for the first time in 2013," Ms Sherry said.

P&O's arrival into Moreton Island also highlighted the popularity of cruising into Queensland with the state recorded as the second biggest cruise state after New South Wales.

The cruise industry is reported to have generated an estimated AUD$590 million for the Queensland economy in 2011-12 including AUD $336 million in direct expenditure.

"The addition of Moreton Island to the Queensland cruise map is another win for the state's economy," Ms Stuckey said.

"Cruising has been the fastest growing segment of the Queensland tourism market during the past year, and the Newman Government is happy to support innovative experiences like the P&O visit to Moreton Island.
