These new ships currently under construction for delivery in 2012
and 2103 highlight an interesting statistic in as much as the breakdown in
regards to cost per berth is concerned. It dramatically highlights the
difference between large ships and the small, boutique products. Looking at the cost of the Europa 2 and the Le Soleil one can appreciate why the cost of cruising on these boutique ships is substantially more expensive. Having said that one also must appreciate that the quality and delivery on-board on these boutique ship is also to an extremely high standard which represents more expensive running costs brought about by additional crew (most of the boutique ships have at least a 1:1 crew to passenger ratio), plus they offer a better dining experience and some also include wines with meals and free shore excursions. The bigger ships benefit from an economy of scale, for example, the purchasing power of companies like Carnival who are purchasing huge quantities of food, wines and so on for a fleet of ships results in a much small per diem across the board. 2012
