Silversea's expedition ship, Silver Explorer became the first ever cruise ship to call into Lyme Regis

Sunday May 20th saw Silversea’s luxury expedition ship, Silver Explorer, call in Lyme Regis, marking the first time a cruise ship has ever visited the West Dorset town. The scheduled call in Lyme Regis – the first port of call in an itinerary that began in Portsmouth and also incorporates Dartmouth; Tresco, Isles of Scilly; Waterford, Ireland; Glengarriff; Galway; Killybegs; Church Bay,Rathlin Island; Portrush; Staffa, Scotland; Iona, UK; Brodick, Isle of Arran; and Greenock (Glasgow), Scotland – highlights the advantage of being onboard one of Silversea’s ships, which are able to dock in the more remote ports inaccessible to larger ships.

Lyme Regis pulled out all the stops to honor the inaugural cruise ship call and is preparing a series of celebrations for the day. Guests where able to plan their time in Lyme Regis based on advice from two experienced locals who will be stepping aboard Silver Explorer and, as guests disembark at Cobb Harbour, they will be given a special welcome by the town mayor and the town crier.

Silversea’s call coincides with an opening ceremony for Lyme Regis’ newly refurbished sea-front shelters on Marine Parade, which have been constructed in time for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Also attending the ceremony, the Royal Navy, who had already  arrived on the impressive HMS EDINBURGH, where anchored in the bay throughout along with Silver Explorer.

Silver Explorer will arrive in Lyme Regis at 0700 on Sunday 20 May 2012 as part of her Portsmouth, UK to Greenock (Glasgow), Scotland voyage from 19 – 30 May 2012.

Other new ports of call for Silversea on this particular trip include Killybegs and Brodick, Isle of Arran.

Silver Explorer is Silversea’s purpose-built, luxury expedition ship designed specifically for navigating waters in some of the world’s most remote destinations, including both of the earth’s polar regions. A fleet of Zodiac boats allows guests to visit even the most off-the-beaten path locations and an expert Expedition Team provides insight and understanding to each unforgettable adventure.
