If you are interested in checking on the location of any ship's
current position worldwide there is a web-site for you.
Maritimetraffic.com allows you to input the name of the ship your interested in and it will then take you to a map of the location in which the ship is at that time. Utilizing the service is free, there are however a couple of issues which detract from the usefulness of the site. Although it is real time tracking, it is tracking the ships by it's AIS number, this is transmitted by VHF which is basically a short distance communication radio so the ship has to be somewhere near land and also land that has a way of monitoring the AIS number. Secondly, it helps if you have the AIS number of the particular ship your interested in as some names are quite common and you might find your locating the wrong vessel. AIS numbers can generally be found for ships by doing a Google search on the ships name and AIS - oftentimes you will find the ships AIS number along with other information listed on the web. There are other real time methods of tracking modern ships worldwide by their satellite radio transmitters (PoleStar), but this is not generally available to the general public being limited to ship owners and government agencies for security reason. Ships also communicate their AIS numbers to each other as a means of checking on the type of vessel and other information related to the ships voyage. |
