Holland America Line’s Dave Stockert Retiring after 29 Years

Holland America Line sales veteran Dave Stockert will retire from the company after 29 years on Dec. 31. Stockert joined the Seattle-based company in 1983 as a district sales manager and held numerous positions over the years, most recently serving as director of national accounts.

However, Stockert will continue to work with Holland America on a contract basis over the next year, representing the premium line at functions and events.

Stockert is an affable and popular speaker at industry conferences, ship inaugurations and trade shows. “He has been a constant HAL presence for decades at trade shows, conventions, ship inaugurations and training sessions,” Paul Allen, vice president of sales, wrote in a company memo announcing the retirement. “Through his promotional training seminars, noted for their humor and their animal hats, Dave educated an entire generation of travel agents on the benefits of selling Holland America. When agents visit the Holland America booth at any industry function, their first question is usually, ‘Where’s Dave?’ ”

“It’s been a great run,” Stockert said. “If you’re good to your travel agent, your travel agent will be good to you, and they’ve certainly been good to me by supporting me. I appreciate and share in their success.”

Stockert has also written two books called “The Idea Machine” and “The Idea Machine II” that are full of sales and promotional ideas for travel agents. He also writes a column called “Idea Machine” for Vacation Agent magazine, a sister publication to TravelPulse.

Stockert was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Society of Travel Agents in 2007. He was also named Holland America Employee of the Year in 1994.

“Dave’s optimism and good humor are contagious,” Allen wrote. “It is hard to think about him without smiling. He has always been one of the most approachable cruise executives in the industry. We have been lucky to have him representing Holland America all this time.”
