Avalon Waterways Offers New River Cruise Itineraries

 for 2013

Avalon Waterways is offering five new itineraries in 2013, including river cruises in Northern Holland, Central and Eastern Europe and China. Many cruisers have explored Netherlands’ Tulips in southern Holland, but in 2013, Avalon is also offering a new eight-day “Tulips of Northern Holland” vacation

“Every year, our traditional Tulip Time Cruise sells out,” said Managing Director Patrick Clark. “Now, we’re giving our travelers who love the beauty and history of Holland’s tulips a chance to combine some well-known sights with off-the-beaten-path experiences.”

Originating in Amsterdam, this itinerary explores the region of North Holland, where tulip fields abound, before cruising farther north to Friesland, famous for its black-and-white cows. The cruise also includes Ijsselmeer, a walking tour in Hoorn, the ZuiderZee Museum in Enkhuizen, the Batavia shipyard in Lely tad, a windmill outside the fishing village of Vole dam, Arnhem and Rotterdam. Onboard, guests will be able to sample Dutch cheeses and Genève as part of Avalon’s new Culture & Cruise program.

Also new is the nine-day “Austrian Highlights & Bavaria” cruise vacation, which visits Vienna, Melk, Dürnstein and Grain before heading into Germany’s Bavaria to see Munich, Oberammergau and the fairytale castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. Onboard, as part of the complimentary Culture & Cruise offerings, a local chef will prepare regional specialties and guests will taste wine from the Wachau valley.

The new 13-day “Highlights of Germany” trip travels from Munich to Basel and includes castles Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Bamberg and Würzberg. Onboard, the ship will serve German beers as part of the Culture & Cruise program.

With both 10- and 12-day options, the “Capitals of Central Europe” itinerary includes Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and the small towns along the way. As part of the Culture & Cruise experience, guests can attend an onboard Slovak folk music performance. .

For the next cruise season, Avalon is introducing two new ships in Asia -- the Century Legend and Century Paragon -- and adding a fourth itinerary, a Small Group Discovery vacation, the 15-day “Enchanting China & the Yangtze River,” will visit Beijing, Xian, Lijiang, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
