Captain Cook Cruises- Australia's mini-cruise line sold

Captain Cook Cruises - operator of a number of harbor cruise vessels as well as Barrier Reef ships and a paddlewheeler on the Murray River has been sold for an undisclosed sum to SeaLink Travel Group.

The purchase includes 15 vessels used in Sydney Harbor and a paddle wheeler cruise operation on the River Murray in South Australia.  The deal does not include the Fijian operation of Captain Cook Cruises.

Founder Captain Trevor Haworth said: “As a family business we have always placed an enormous value on our staff, customer and business relationship. It is very satisfying to know that SeaLink shares these same values.”

All 300 of the company's employees are expected to keep their jobs, Captain Cook Cruises founder Captain Trevor Haworth said.

"The sale represented a new chapter in the history of the company and SeaLink is the ideal tourism partner to add further investment and grow this business even further," he said in a statement today .

Capt Haworth said his family business had done well during a challenging period for Australian tourism and the sale price was "a fair reflection of the company's performance and its strong future prospects".

SeaLink, the operator of the Kangaroo Island ferry service south of Adelaide, says the acquisition is expected to add $30 million to its bottom line.

Capt. Trevor Hayworth retired as Executive Chairman in December of 2008 after 38 years with his company.  He retained the title of Non-executive Chairman.  His son Anthony Haworth has been appointed general manager of Captain Cook with daughter Jackie Haworth remaining as director of sales.
