Princess, Holland America & Carnival drop Mazatlan in wake of violence

Princess Cruises, Holland America and Carnival join the list of cruise lines (Including NCL & Disney) dropping Mazatlan in the wake of violence in the Mexican port city.

All three of the lines say they will substitute extra time in other Mexican destinations on the West Coast for upcoming calls in Mazatlan for the rest of the spring season.

"At Holland America Line, the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority," the line says in a statement released early today.

Princess, in a statement released late Friday, cited "continuing security concerns in Mazatlan that include incidents in the city's tourist areas."

"Although there have been no incidents involving cruise passengers, the safety of our guests and crew is our number one priority," Carnival  says in a statement it issued.

Holland America says seven-day cruises scheduled for the 1,916-passenger Oosterdam departing March 12, 19, 26 and April 9 and 16 will now feature an extra day in Puerto Vallarta instead of a visit to Mazatlan. The April 2 departure will replace Mazatlan with an extra day (and overnight stay) in Cabo San Lucas.

The 10-day sailings on the 1,432-passenger Zaandam departing April 10 and the 14-day sailing on the Oosterdam departing April 23 now will call twice in Cabo San Lucas instead of just once.

Princess, which has one ship sailing to the West Coast of Mexico this spring, the 2,670-passenger Sapphire Princess, also will substitute extra time in Cabo San Lucas for stops in Mazatlan.

Affected Sapphire Princess sailings include this week's seven-night voyage (which departed Los Angeles on Saturday) and seven-night departures on March 19, April 9, April 16, April 23 and April 30.

Both lines say passengers on the sailings are being notified of the changes.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and our decisions will be guided by information and recommendations from a variety of U.S. government and security agencies," Princess says.

Holland America and Princess are following Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line in suspending calls in Mazatlan in the wake of a number of violent incidents in the port including the recent murder of two people in front of a hotel frequented by tourists.
