Prominent Cruise Individuals feature in latest Forbes list of Billionaires

As always, cruise figures including Micky Arison dot Forbes’ billionaires list, topped by Mexico telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu with a net worth of $74bn. The list has a record 1,210 names with a record combined wealth of $4.5 trillion.

Carnival Corp. & plc’s Arison is ranked 169th with $5.9bn—more than the combined fortunes of Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump. His sister, Shari Arison, is at 200th, with $5.1bn.

Royal Caribbean investors Sammy Ofer and family are ranked 79th, with $10.3bn. Eyal Ofer has served as a Royal Caribbean director since 1995.

Leon Black, co-founder of private equity giant Apollo Management, which has investments in Norwegian Cruise Line and Prestige Cruise Holdings, is at No. 310, with $3.5bn. Marc Rowan, an Apollo Management partner and NCL director, is at 833 with $1.5bn.

Norwegian shipping magnates and Royal Caribbean investors Arne Wilhelmsen and family and Royal Caribbean investor and director Thomas Pritzker are even at 564, with $2.1bn.

Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud of Saudi Arabia, who invested $20m for a 5% stake in NCL in 1997, ranks 26th, with $19.6bn.

Real estate investor Sam Zell, whose holdings once included American Classic Voyages, which went bust after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, is at No. 208, with $5bn.

Lim Kok Thay, who runs the Genting Group including Genting Hong Kong, the parent of Star Cruises and a 50% owner of NCL, is also a very wealthy man. However, his net worth is under $1bn, according to Forbes, which puts it at $665m.

And Mediterranean Shipping Co. founder Gianluigi Aponte, who also owns MSC Cruises, is not on the billionaires list for a third year. In 2008 the Aponte family were estimated to have a net worth of $4.8bn.
