Costa reports 33% growth in the Mediterranean

Costa Cruises estimates that with about 2,800 calls in 92 destinations, there will be almost 9m passenger movements in Mediterranean ports for its fleet this year. This is a 33% increase over 2010.

Italy’s ports will benefit most from the cruise traffic generated by Costa, with almost 4m passenger movements, 50% more than last year. Costa’s ships will be responsible for more more than one-third of the 11m passenger movements expected in Italy’s ports in 2011, according to Cemar.

After Italy, the Mediterranean countries expected to see the most Costa passenger movements are Spain and Greece, each with more than 1m passenger movements, and France, with more than half a million.

Costa’s ships will be calling at a total of 92 Mediterranean ports, including 21 in Italy, 17 in Spain, 11 in Greece and nine in France.

Costa’s expansion in the Mediterranean in 2011 will be supported by the new Costa Favolosa (114,500gt and 3,780 total passengers), currently nearing completion and set to depart July 4 on a vernissage cruise from Venice.  The ship will be 15th in the fleet.

Next year a sister, Costa Fascinosa, joins the lineup, fueling continued Mediterranean growth with forecasts of around 9.5m passenger movements.

Next year Costa ships will call at 22 destinations in Italy with the return of Trieste as one of the company’s domestic ports of departure.
