Falmouth proving to be Jamaica's favorite cruise port

Nearly 100,000 cruise passengers arrived at Jamaica’s new Falmouth cruise port between February and April, making the new facility the country’s busiest cruise terminal, overtaking Ocho Rios, said Port Authority (PAJ) and Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) officials quoted in local news reports.

Falmouth hosted 50,700 passengers in April, driving a 41 percent cruise passenger increase at Jamaica’s four cruise ports (Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Port Antonio) for the month, compared with 2010 totals. The Falmouth cruise passenger increase come amid a “slight reduction” in port calls to Ocho Rios from 2010, although PAJ intends to improve the Ocho Rios pier, according to the Ministry of Finance’s Jamaica Public Bodies 2011-12 report.

“To further capitalize on developments in the cruise industry and maintain a secured position in this area, plans are also in place to upgrade the Ocho Rios cruise ship pier,” said the report.

Falmouth hosted its first cruise ship Feb. 17 and celebrated its official opening in March. Construction on the facility’s restaurants, retail shops and transportation center continue. Subsequent phases are slated to include on-site attractions and hotel and residential developments.
