Philadelphia loses cruise ship terminal

The Port of Philadelphia cruise ship terminal will cease operations in 2011 The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) today announced that it will end its operation of the Port of Philadelphia's cruise ship terminal.

The authority have made the decision citing "declining demand."

Officials of the agency that serves both Pennsylvania and New Jersey stated that the move will save $18 million in future renovation costs, and produce immediate savings of $627,000 in overall operating expenses.

According to local media reports, terminating the lease and closing the facility will also save $2,226,728 in future lease and other costs.

Port authority figures state that the number of ships departing from the terminal at Philadelphia's Navy Yard has declined significantly from a peak of 36 in 2006.

The effective date of the terminal closure was December 31, 2010 but DRPA stated that it will be honoring all previously scheduled events, cruises and commitments until June 30, 2011.

Only two cruises are scheduled for 2011.
