Greek Cabotage legislation still not ratified

Despite optimistic noises from Greek ministers in early December that legislation abolishing cabotage was on its way to be ratified by the government before the end of 2011, it did not happen.

On January 3, minister for Development, Competitiveness and Shipping, Michalis Chrysochoidis was still talking in the future.

That day MSC Magnifica was the first cruise ship of 2012 to call in Piraeus and he and other government and Piraeus port heavyweights went on board to welcome the ship.

On board Chrysochoidis said the bill was being finalized and would be tabled in parliament. There are six ministries involved with its drafting and though seafarer opposition seems to have been overcome, the involvement of six Greek ministries results in a mountain of redtape, notes an insider.

The cabotage legislation is part of a larger bill which contains articles on sea tourism generally, including issues involving ferries, yachting, marinas and game fishing.

It’s a matter of planning, deputy minister for Development, Competitiveness and Shipping, Adonis Georgiadis affirmed late last year. A few weeks earlier he had assured cruise line execs attending the Seatrade Winter Cruising Forum that Greece was ready to work with the industry to grow cruising.
