The Cruise Lines International Associations is forecasting that
the industry will draw a record 16 million passengers from around the globe.
Recently released statistics show the total number of people cruising worldwide
will be up 6.6% from 2010, when 15 million people took a cruise. Driving the increase: More than half a dozen major new ships from such lines as Carnival, Celebrity Cruises and Disney Cruise Line. "The cruise industry has ridden the economic storm of the past 18-plus months with remarkable resiliency, skill and success," Princess executive vice president Jan Swartz, the new marketing committee chair of the cruise association, says in a statement. "We are confident that ... 2011 will be another strong year." As in past years, the majority of the world's cruisers will come from North America, though the number of non-North Americans cruising continues to grow rapidly. The cruise association says it expects 73% of cruisers in 2011, or 11.68 million, will come from North America, up from 11.1 million in 2010. The association says 4.32 million cruisers will come from outside North America, up from 3.9 million in 201 The Cruise Lines International Association represents most major lines worldwide, including industry giants Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises. Since 1980, the average annual passenger growth rate for Cruise Lines International Association member lines has been more than 7.5%, making cruising the fastest-growing segment of the travel industry. In 2010, the industry's major players collectively unveiled 12 ships representing an investment of $5.9 billion, including two of the largest cruise vessels ever built: Royal Caribbean's 5,400-passenger Allure of the Seas and Norwegian Cruise Line's 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. More than 20 more ships currently are on order for delivery in 2011 and 2012. Among cruise industry trends expected for 2011, according to a survey of Cruise Lines International Association members also released today: -- Growing interest in Europe cruises, both on ships sailing in oceans and on Europe's rivers. -- Globalization of itineraries, including shorter cruises in Europe and elsewhere. -- Increased choice in dining experiences, with more specialty restaurants, guests chefs and local sourcing of food. -- Growing
interest in theme cruises, particularly those revolving around food and wine,
music, culture and art. |
