Now is the time to book that group on the Oasis of the Seas with fares down 'dramatically' this year |

Royal Caribbean's 5,400-passenger
Oasis of the Seas,
2011 might be your opportunity to get onboard. Pricing for the Oasis is down "dramatically" in 2011as the world's co-largest cruise ship struggles to compete with its sister vessel, the brand new Allure of the Seas. Matthew Jacob, a cruise industry analyst with New York-based ITG Investment Research, said that the Oasis is one of many ships that has taken a hit due to the amount of new capacity in the Caribbean this season. "The benefit of this new capacity is that it gets very strong pricing, but it is coming at a cost to the other ships in the fleet, which are continuing to struggle," Jacob said. Jacob's data shows that the newest ships are driving what appears to be a cruise pricing recovery, but that the older vessels are struggling to even get the pricing they managed last year. "If you look at the Oasis of the Seas, and look at the pricing it's getting this year versus last year, the pricing is down dramatically," Jacob said. Not that the Oasis cruises are easy on the wallet. Jacob said that between the two Oasis-class ships, they are pricing much higher than their competition on similar itineraries, by anywhere from 30-50%. He said part of the problem is that there isn't enough demand at the higher end of the leisure travel market right now, meaning only the ships at the very top end can command the highest prices. "A step below, there is trouble," he said. He pointed to Royal Caribbean's 3,600-passenger Freedom-class ships, which before the Oasis debuted in December 2010, were among the highest priced cruises. "The Freedom-class ships used to be the best in the Royal Caribbean brand," he said. "Now that Oasis-class is there the Freedom-class is taking a decent hit to their pricing". |
