Industry mourns Antonio Lefebvre d'Ovidio

The industry is mourning the passing of Antonio Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the founder of Silversea Cruises, who died aged 98, on February 5.

Lefebvre was a maritime lawyer and professor of maritime law before acquiring and operating cargo ships and ferries in the Adriatic.

According to a book published in 2004 to commemorate Silversea's first decade in operation entitled: Silversea - The First Ten Years, Lefebvre later took the family into partnership with Boris Vlasov's Vlasov Group to co-own Sitmar Cruises until its merger with Princess Cruises in 1988.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Lefebvre had a vision to launch an ultra-luxury, six-star cruise brand which culminated in the birth of Silversea Cruises and the arrival of the line's first ship, Silver Cloud, in 1994.

Antonio's son Manfredi, the chairman of Silversea, spoke publicly of his parents at the naming of Silver Spirit at Port Everglades in January 2010. He said Silversea was created from the vision of his father, and the late Mauro Terrevazzi, who became the first ceo of the cruise brand.

‘This is a legacy for the next generation,’ Manfredi said at the ceremony, at which his sister Silvia acted as godmother of the ship.
