The Mighty Mississippi will see two steamboats competing on the
river next year. The American Queen, the largest steamboat in the world, will be
back on the river in the spring, cruising for the newly formed Great American
Steamboat Co. The American Queen will compete with a new 140-sternwheeler, the Queen of the Mississippi, (watch the launch videon) being built for American Cruise Lines, which previously announced plans to launch Civil War-themed cruises on the Mississippi next summer. Congressman Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., announced the U.S. Maritime Administration had signed off on the $15.5 million sale of the 436-passenger American Queen, clearing the way for operations. He said the paddlewheeler would be homeported in Memphis. The famous steamboat, which was launched in 1995, had been laid up in Beaumont, Texas, since 2008 and the shutdown of Majestic America Line. The American Queen also previously operated on the Mississippi for Delta Queen Steamboat Co., which ceased operations in 2001. Great American CEO Jeff Krida told the Memphis Daily News the American Queen would undergo a $5 million renovation before resuming service. Spokesman Tim Rubacky says, "We look forward to moving into our new home along the banks of the mighty Mississippi and showcasing the heartland once again. Additional details will be unveiled in the coming weeks." |
